WANT TO BE ON THE TELLY?

My name is Milly Fraser and I am contacting you as a member of the contestant team on BBC One’s extreme gameshow TOTAL WIPEOUT.

Total Wipeout is all about having fun and trying to complete one of the most entertaining courses on TV! You may have seen it on Saturday nights on BBC1.

We are currently recruiting new contestants for the series and are looking for people from all walks of life. However, we do not have a lot of applications from over the age of 35, especially women over the age of 35, and we are very keen to ensure that they are represented on the show.

I was hoping you would be able to assist me in reaching some members from the Southern West Veterans Athletics Club who may be interested in participating. I have attached a flyer that we are giving out to people who are interested.

Any interested parties should visit the following website: www.bbc.co.uk/beonashow/total_wipeout.shtml

Fill in the application form and post it back to the address provided and mark it for my attention.

Please can you contact me on 020 8222 4041 or milly.fraser@endemoluk.com if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Milly Fraser | Assistant Producer

Want to Run 10k for Somerset?

Following on from last year's SW Inter-Counties at Wimborne this year's SW Inter-Counties has just been finalised and it will be taking part in Chippenham, Wiltshire, on Sunday 9Th November 2008. The Race will be a Road-Race 10K and will incorporate the SW Inter-Counties, as well as the Wiltshire County Champs.

Last year, due to poor communications and an important X-Country event on the same day, Somerset were unable to field a strong side and we suffered as a result on the day.
This year we really need a good showing, as we have many fine athletes in the County, and we should be pushing for a top-three finish.

If any athlete is interested, or knows some-one else, who would like to be considered for the team, could they please let me know. The County will pay for the Race entry, and may be able to help with travel costs.

Look forward to hearing from you soon,

Yours Truly

Free Olympic Trial Tickets We have secured a number of tickets for the Olympic trials being held in Birmingham on Friday 11th-Sunday 13th July. We would like to offer each club up to 4 free places and have reserved a block for the region (in the home straight).
Each club can have any combination of days for for people but we need to know which days and if they are adults or children (it is more cost effective for us if it is a Saturday and Sunday (weekend ticket) or single one day tickets.

Please see the UK Athletics website for full details of the programme.

We need to confirm the tickets ASAP so would ask that any requests are received in the office by Monday 16th June, any later than that and we cannot guarantee getting the quota.  This will be done on a strictly first come first served basis, so to guarantee your tickets please reply as soon as possible.

We will need know numbers initially but then once confirmed we will need names (and age of juniors) by 20th June.

Kind regards

ULTRA DISTANCE RUNNING......... from Tom Scrivens

I would be most grateful if you would be good enough to publicize the following new Event among your club members. Axe Valley Runners are holding one 12 hour and two six hour time trial races at the Exeter Arena Athletic Track on September 20th 2008.  With the first 6 hour starting at 7:00 am and finishing at 1:00 pm, the 12 hour will start at 7:30 am and finish at 7:30 pm, and the second 6 hour will commence at 2:00 pm and finish at 8:00pm. The name of the events:  Trackattack 612

The ultimate aim of these events for the future is to establish Devon as the centre of ultra distance Track Racing in the South West.  Therefore we intend this year to start ‘small’ and get experience with 12 and 6 hour races, hopefully to be followed by a 24 hour event next year and by a full 6 day event the year after that.

In August last year I made many contacts in Germany when I took part in a 6 day event where there was huge support and enthusiasm among runners and organisers alike for longer ultras such as 6 and 7 day events, none of which unfortunately exist in the UK at the current time. Many of these guys told me they would love to come to the UK if only we would put on similar events over here. Undoubtedly they would have a great international flavour and could put Devon firmly and permanently onto the ultra distance map.

The entry limit for each race is 20 runners, so ultimately there will never be more than 40 runners on the track at any one time. Priority for entry will be given to runners who bring their own lap recording person who will be responsible for recording each completed lap by their runner on the record sheets provided.

I’m taking the liberty of attaching an entry form (click here) for anyone who may be interested in taking part and would stress that early entry is recommended as already there is a lot of interest in these three prestigious events. I would also like to ask at this time for volunteer helpers on the day; people who would/could be, lap recorders, ‘scene shifters’, trackside helpers, etc, etc. No experience necessary as ‘training’ will be given!

I’m looking forward to hearing from lots and lots of you!

Ever in the Long Run,

Tom Scriven tomloony.scriven@virgin.net

Hi, Whilst on holiday Martin and myself entered this race coming 47th and 65th. It's a good scenic course (St. Levan 10k - see report on the Road News Page).

From Julian Kennedy:

The British Masters' Inter Area match will take place in Luton on 18 Sept 2004. SW Vets have not entered a team this year but any member wishing to take part will be cheerfully accepted as a guest. For further information contact Irene Nichols at irenen@aol.com and information as to how to find the track is on www.runtrackdir.com

From Bob Minting:

Mike Erith not only took Gold at the European Championships in the 800 m, but in fact took part in all the flat track races right through from 100 m to the marathon. That is true dedication to the Sport

From Denmark:

News from the European Masters Championships 2004 held in the last week of July in Denmark. Bob Minting took Bronze in the Mens 50 with a cracking time of 2.05.01. Bob a former European M50 Champion at this distance is now at the top end of his age group so Men 55 look out next year.

South West Veterans’ Athletics Club, hereinafter referred to as SWVAC, is affiliated to the British Masters Athletics Federation (BMAF) and to the England Athletics Masters Association (EAMA). It is responsible for the conduct of veteran athletics within its area. A veteran athlete was a woman not less than 35 years of age or a man not less than 40. However the world trend is to include men also from the age of 35. As a result we have moved with the times and now accept anyone from the age of 35 up. Our affiliation to the British Masters Athletic Federation admits our members to National, European and World Masters Athletic Championships.

SWVAC publishes a magazine, “Veteranews”, sent free to its members three times a year in April, August and December.
